The International Documentary Association announced Tuesday, September 21 the 11 recipients of its 2021 In-Kind Documentary Screening Series Grant.
First piloted last year, the grant has expanded in 2021 to support filmmakers from any historically excluded community, including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, D/Deaf, and disabled filmmakers. IDA wishes to minimize the financial burdens associated with pursuing a film awards campaign with the grant.
The package recipients receive, valued at US$15,000, includes a virtual screening event of IDA’s documentary screening series with Q&As hosted by the filmmaker, a print advertisement in Documentary magazine, digital advertising on IDA channels and a free annual subscription to Doc Maker.
“We recognized and saw the need to create support that relieves some of the financial burden on independent manufacturers undertaking self-funded awards campaigns. As awards seasons continue to lengthen and campaigns become more expensive, we we must all continue to take bold steps to create a more equitable and inclusive documentary field,” said Jina Chung, Sr. Dr. Development & Partnerships with IDA.
The 11 selected films will be included in the IDA Documentary Screening Series, a curated collection of acclaimed documentary films from the previous year. The series runs from September 20 to December 16, with filmmaker conversations hosted both in person and virtually.
