Lee Morgan’s full live at the lighthouse finally launched!

Blue Note Records has finally released details of the upcoming box set of Lee Morgan, cover the star Jazzwise 260 and is the subject of an in-depth article by Stuart Nicholson in the same issue.

The late trumpet legend’s complete engagement (three nights, 12 sets) at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, Calif., between July 10 and July 12, 1970, is to be released in full – on 12 LPs or eight CDs – for the first time on July 30 as The Complete Live At The Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, CA. The new box surprises one of jazz’s greatest trumpeters at the top of his game with a stellar band: Harold Maber at the piano, jymie merritt on bass, mickey rocker on the battery and Bennie Maupin tenor, flute and bass clarinet.

the original Live at the lighthouse album was released in 1971, with an expanded CD version appearing in 1996. Now fans can enjoy the entire series, complete with intros, asides, and announcements (like Morgan telling the audience that Blue Note recorded the shows, so he wouldn’t accept requests or play older hits) – there are over four hours of unreleased music in all.

Supervised by producer Zev Feldman, the box set also includes a booklet containing new interviews with Bennie Maupin and the last long interview with Jymie Merritt before his death last year; essays by Jeffery McMillan (author of the definitive biography Delightfulee: The Life and Music of Lee Morgan) and Michael Cuscuna; statements by Jack DeJohnette, Wallace Roney, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Eddie Henderson, Dave Douglas and others; never-before-seen photos of Joel Franklin and Lee Tanner; as well as a statement from Morgan’s family.

The audio was mixed from Francois WolfThe original ½” 4-track cassettes from Steve Genewick at Capitol Studios with LP mastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and 180g vinyl made at Record Technology Inc (RTI) in Camarillo, CA. The mastering of the CD was done by Robert Vosgien at Capitol Studios.
